FAQ

If your question isn’t here, just ask. We’re happy to talk through whatever you’re wondering about.

Who is Calm Pause for?

Calm Pause is for families of children with special needs — parents, guardians, grandparents, foster caregivers, and anyone else in a primary caregiving role. We serve families at every stage, whether you’re just getting a diagnosis or you’ve been living this for years. The short version: if you’re raising or caring for a child with special needs, you’re exactly who we’re here for.

Do I need a formal diagnosis to participate?

No. A formal diagnosis is not required for many of our programs. We understand that the path to diagnosis can be long, confusing, and expensive — and that families often need support well before any paperwork is finalized. If you’re concerned about your child and looking for support, you’re welcome here. We’ll figure out together what fits your situation.

What kinds of special needs do you support?

We support families across a wide range of special needs — developmental, physical, emotional, and learning differences. Autism is a significant part of our community, but we’re not autism-exclusive. Whatever your child’s particular needs look like, we invite you to reach out and learn whether what we offer is a good fit. No one is turned away because their child’s needs don’t fit a specific category.

Are your programs free?

We aim to keep costs as low as possible so that financial barriers don’t stand between families and support. Program fees, subsidies, and availability vary depending on the specific offering. Contact us directly to find out what’s currently available and whether there’s a fee-assistance option for you. We never want cost to be the reason a family can’t participate.

How do I sign up for programs or events?

The best way is to reach out directly — by email at info@calmpause.ca or by phone at (416) 858-0321. We’ll let you know what’s currently running, what’s coming up, and how to register. Our team is glad to answer questions before you commit to anything — there’s no pressure to sign up before you’re ready.

Do you offer online or virtual programs?

Yes. We offer virtual and hybrid options for caregivers who can’t attend in person — whether that’s because of location, childcare, health, or simply what your schedule allows. Our Online Emotional Reset Programs, for example, bring meditation, expressive arts, and peer support into your home. Let us know what you’re looking for and we’ll tell you what’s possible right now.

How can I support Calm Pause financially?

You can support us through donations, sponsorships, fundraising events, or corporate partnerships. Donations to registered nonprofits like Calm Pause are tax-deductible in Canada (it’s always worth consulting your own tax advisor for your specific situation). Monthly giving is available if you’d prefer to contribute on a recurring basis. Every contribution — no matter the size — goes directly to programs that hold families together. Visit our Donate page to learn more.

Can I volunteer with Calm Pause?

Absolutely. Volunteers are essential to what we do. There are many ways to get involved — from event support and facilitation to outreach and professional services — and not all roles require formal credentials or specialized training. If you have time, energy, or a specific skill you’d like to offer, we’d love to hear from you. Head to our Volunteer page for more details, or email us directly at info@calmpause.ca.

Where are you located?

Calm Pause is a Canadian nonprofit. Our primary contact number is in the Greater Toronto Area, but we serve families across Canada and offer virtual programming for those who can’t access in-person events. Services and availability do vary by location. Reach out and we’ll let you know what’s accessible to you.

What if I’m in crisis right now?

Please reach out to a crisis resource right away. Calm Pause is a support and community organization — we’re not a crisis service, and we want to make sure you get the right help quickly. In Canada, you can call or text 9-8-8 (Suicide Crisis Helpline, available 24/7). Kids Help Phone is available for young people and their families at 1-800-668-6868. If you or someone in your care is in immediate danger, please call 911. You can also find local crisis lines through your province’s mental health services. We care about you — please get support if you need it now.
